What Is The Definition Of Faith

“What is the definition of faith?”Thankfully, the Bible contains a clear definition of faith in Hebrews 11:1"Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen."Simply put, the biblical definition of faith is "trusting in something you cannot explicitly prove."This definition of faith contains two aspects: to intellectually concur and trust. When we concur intellectuallyit is to believe something to be true.

Trust is actually relying on the fact that the something is true. A chair is often used to help illustrate this. When we concur intellectuallywe recognize the fact that a chair is a chair andagreeingthat it is designed to support a person who sits on it. Trust is actuallysitting in the chair.Understanding these two aspects of faith is crucial. Many people believe certain facts about Jesus Christ. Many people willintellectuallyagree with the facts the Bible declares about Jesus. But knowing those facts to be true is not what the Bible means by "faith." The biblical definition of faith requires, intellectuallyagreeing to the factsand thentrusting the facts.Believing that Jesus is God incarnate who died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins and was resurrected is not enough. Even the demons believe in God and in those facts James 2:19We must personally and fully rely on the death of Christ as the atoning sacrifice for our sins. We must "sit in the chair" of the salvation that Jesus Christ has provided. This is saving faith. The faith God requires of us for salvation is belief in what the Bible says about who Jesus is and what He accomplishedandfully trusting in Jesus for that salvation Acts 16:31.

Biblical faith is always accompanied by repentance of sin (Matthew 21:32; Mark 1:15).The biblical definition of faith does not apply only to salvation. It is equally applicable to the rest of the Christian life. We are to believe what the Bible says, and we are to obey it. We are to believe the promises of God, and we are to live accordingly. We are to agree with the truth of God's Word, and we are to allow ourselves to be transformed by it (Romans 12:2).Why is this definition of faith so important? Why must trust accompany agreeing with facts? Because "without faith, it is impossible to please God" (Hebrews 11:6). Without faith, we cannot be saved ( John 3:16).

Without faith, the Christian life cannot be what God intends it to be

(John 10:10).

What is faith ?

Hebrews 11:1Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.

Perhaps no other component of the Christian life is more important than faith. We cannot purchase it, sell it or give it to our friends. So what is faith and what role does faith play in the Christian life? The dictionary defines faith as "belief in, devotion to, or trust in somebody or something, especially without logical proof." It also defines faith as "belief in and devotion to God." The Bible has much more to say about faith and how important it is. In fact, it is so important that without faith we have no place with God, and it is impossible to please Him

Hebrews 11:6 And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.

Faith is belief in the one, true God without actually seeing Him.Where does faith come from?

Ephesians 2:8-9God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can't take credit for this; it is a gift from God.Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.

It is clear that faith is a gift from God, not because we deserve it, have earned it, or are worthy to have it. It is not from ourselves; it is from God. It is not obtained by our power or our free will. It is simply given to us by God, along with His grace and mercy, according to His holy plan and purpose, and because of that, He gets all the glory.

Faith is not :

Something we conjure up on our own

Not something we are born with,

Not a result of diligence in study or pursuit of the spiritual.

Why have faith?

God designed a way to distinguish between those who belong to Him and those who don't, and it is called faith. Very simply, we need faith to please God. God tells us that it pleases Him that we believe in Him even though we cannot see Him. A key part of Hebrews 11:6 tells us that "He rewards those who earnestly seek him."

This is not to say that we have faith in God just to get something from Him. However, God loves to bless those who are obedient and faithful. We see a perfect example of this in Luke 7:50. Jesus is engaged in dialog with a sinful woman when He gives us a glimpse of why faith is so rewarding.

Luke 7:50

"Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

The woman believed in Jesus Christ by faith and He rewarded her for it.

Finally, faith is what sustains us to the end, knowing by faith that we will be in heaven with God for all eternity.

1 Peter 1:8-9You love him even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him now, you trust him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy. The reward for trusting him will be the salvation of your souls.

Examples of faith.

Hebrews chapter 11 is known as the "faith chapter" because in it great deeds of faith are described for example by Faith:

  • Abel offered a pleasing sacrifice to the Lord (v. 4);
  • Noah prepared the ark in a time when rain was unknown (v. 7)
  • Abraham left his home and obeyed God's command to go he knew not where, then willingly offered up his only son (vv. 8-10, 17)
  • Moses led the children of Israel out of Egypt (vv. 23-29)
  • Rahab received the spies of Israel and saved her life (v. 31).
  • Many more heroes of the faith are mentioned "who through faith

  • Conquered kingdoms
  • Administered justice
  • Gained what was promised
  • Shut the mouths of lions
  • Quenched the fury of the flames
  • Escaped the edge of the sword
  • Whose weakness was turned to strength
  • Became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies" (vv. 33-34).
  • Clearly, the existence of faith is demonstrated by action.Faith is the cornerstone of Christianity.

Without demonstrating faith and trust in God we have no place with Him. We believe in God's existence by faith. Most people have a vague, disjointed notion of who God is but lack the reverence necessary for His exalted position in their lives. These people lack the true faith needed to have an eternal relationship with the God who loves them. Faith can fail us at times, but because it is the gift of God, given to His children, He provides times of trial and testing in order to prove that our faith is real and to sharpen and strengthen it. This is why James tells us to consider it "pure joy" because the testing of our faith produces perseverance and matures us, providing the evidence that our faith is real

James 1:2-4Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy.For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

Faith is nothing more than the instrument to receive our salvation. Nowhere is Scripture will we find that we are justified on account of our faith. Scripture says that we are justified by faith. Faith is nothing but the channel by which this righteousness of God in Christ become ours. It is not our faith that saves us.

What saves us is the Lord Jesus Christ and His perfect saving work. It is the death of Christ upon Calvary's Cross that saves us. It is God putting Christ's righteousness to our account that saves. Faith is only the channel and the instrument by which His righteousness becomes mine. The righteousness that saves is entirely Christ's. Our faith is not our righteousness and we must never define or think of faith as righteousness. Faith is nothing but that which connects us to the Lord Jesus Christ and His righteousness.

The whole emphasis on salvation by faith is clearly on the object of our faith: Jesus Christ. Jesus saves! Faith does not save us. Christ alone does that. The object of our faith is the all-important thing. Our faith must be focused on Christ and His saving work on the cross. Christ died as our substitute. We must trust in Christ to save us.

The righteousness that God has graciously provided becomes ours through simple faith. Faith will not earn your salvation. If it did then faith would be works and God would owe you something. Faith is essential because only those individuals who put their trust in Christ will be saved.Acts 4:12"Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved."
