What Jesus Said About Hell

What Jesus Said about HellMatthew 5:2929 So if your eye-even your good eye (Greek your right eye) -causes you to lust, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

People do not like to think about hell–especially those who are headed there! But that doesn’t mean it isn’t real. We need to know that the Lord Jesus Himself often warned about the reality of hell. Today’s verse is in His Sermon on the Mount, a message often quoted because of its wonderful promises. Hell is also mentioned in the same sermonMatthew 5:2222 But I say, if you are even angry with someone,(Some manuscripts add without cause) you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot,( Greek uses an Aramaic term of contempt: If you say to your brother, ÔÇÿRaca.') you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone,(Greek if you say, ÔÇÿYou fool.') you are in danger of the fires of hell.(Greek Gehenna also in 5:29, 30.)Matthew 5:3030 And if your hand-even your stronger hand(Greek your right hand)-causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. Jesus also stressed in that sermonMatthew 7:1313 "You can enter God's Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell (Greek The road that leads to destruction.) is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. He later warned Matthew 10:2828 "Don't be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell.(Greek Gehenna)The religious leaders of the day were not exempt. To them, speaking of their religious hypocrisy, He saidMatthew 23:3333 Snakes! Sons of vipers! How will you escape the judgment of hell?Hell is also a place of fire or possibly of some fearful environment that could only be described adequately under the metaphor of fire. Matthew 25:4141 "Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, ÔÇÿAway with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons.(Greek his angels.)

Hell is called a “lake of fire” (fiery lake of burning sulphur).by Christ in John’s vision of Him on His great white throne, where He will have to say, Revelation 21:88 "But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars-their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulphur. This is the second death."

Hell will indeed be very real–eternally real! Since Christ is both our Creator and our Saviour, who died for our sins and defeated death by His resurrection, it is foolish for anyone to reject His revelation about hell.
