Sinners Prayer
“What is the sinner’s prayer?”Many people ask, “Is there a prayer I can pray that will guarantee my salvation?” It is important to remember that salvation is not received by reciting a prayer or uttering certain words. Nowhere does the The Bible record that a person can receive salvation by a prayer. Saying a prayer is not the biblical way of salvation. The biblical method of salvation is faith in Jesus Christ. John 3:16 tells us, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Salvation is gained by faith alone.
Ephesians 2:8
8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.
and by receiving Jesus as Savior
John 1:12
12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.
and by fully trusting Jesus alone
John 14:6
6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.
Acts 4:12
12 There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.”
It is crucially important that you do not base your salvation on having said a prayer.
Reciting a prayer cannot save you!
If you want to receive the salvation that is available through Jesus, place your faith in Him.
Fully trust His death as the sufficient sacrifice for your sins. Completely rely on Him alone as your Savior.
That is the biblical method of salvation.
If you have received Jesus as your Savior, by all means, say a prayer to God.
Tell God how thankful you are for Jesus.
Offer praise to God for His love and sacrifice.
Thank Jesus for dying on the cross for your sins and providing salvation for you.
That is the biblical connection between salvation and prayer.
Now, that does not mean prayer cannot be involved in receiving salvation. If you understand the gospel, you believe it to be true, and have accepted Jesus as your salvation, it is good and appropriate to express that faith to God in prayer.
We communicate with God through prayer and it can be a way to progress from accepting facts about Jesus to fully trusting in Him as Savior. Prayer can be the connection for you to place your faith in Jesus alone for your salvation.People who pray to receive Christ but then continue their lives with no apparent change, by reverting back to the ways of the world with one foot in the church should be a cause for concern.
For one to pray and then go on in life without a hunger for spiritual truth and the things concerning God, may be a false conversion. A false conversion occurs when a person (including a child) does not fully comprehend the basic truths leading to salvation.
If people are led to recite a prayer to receive Christ before being led to see their own sinfulness and hopelessness as described in Romans 3:23,
23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.
then they will not see their need for Christ to save them as in Romans 6:23.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.
The single most notable parable about this truth told by Jesus is in Matthew 13:3 about a sower who went to sow seed (God’s Word) in a field (representing lost humanity). All the people in the parable received the seed (God’s Word) gladly, but then soon fell away for various reasons.
Only a few continued to feed themselves daily on the Word, allowing the seed to germinate and grow deep roots in the soil of their hearts until they were converted from sinners to saints The sinner’s prayer is a prayer that you pray to God when you have come to realise and understand that you are a sinner and in need of a Savior. Just saying a sinner’s prayer will not accomplish anything on its own. A true sinner’s prayer only represents what you know, understand, and believe about your sinfulness and your need for salvation. The first aspect of a sinner’s prayer is understanding that we are all sinners as
Romans 3:10 proclaims,
“As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one.”
The Bible makes it clear that we have all sinned.
We are all sinners in need of mercy and forgiveness from God
Titus 3:5-7
5 he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.[a] 6 He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior. 7 Because of his grace he made us right in his sight and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life.
Because of our sin, we deserve eternal punishment Matthew 25:46
46 “And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous will go into eternal life.”The sinner’s prayer is a plea for grace instead of judgment. It is a request for mercy instead of wrath. The second aspect of a sinner’s prayer is knowing what God has done to remedy our lost and sinful condition.God took on flesh and became a human being in the Person of Jesus Christ
John 1:1
In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:1414 So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.Jesus taught us the truth about God and He lived a perfectly righteous and sinless life
John 8:46
46 Which of you can truthfully accuse me of sin? And since I am telling you the truth, why don’t you believe me?
2Corinthians 5:21
21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.Jesus then died on the cross in our place, taking the punishment that we deserve
Romans 5:8
8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
Jesus rose from the dead to prove His victory over sin, death, and hell
Colossians 2:15
15 In this way, he disarmed[a] the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.
and also in 1 Corinthians chapter 15Because of all of this, we can have our sins forgiven and be promised an eternal home in Heaven – if we will just place our faith in Jesus Christ. All we have to do is believe that He died in our place and rose from the dead
Romans 10:9-10
9 If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.
You are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone. Ephesians 2:8 declares, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.”Saying the sinner’s prayer is simply a way of declaring to God that you are relying on Jesus Christ as your Savior. There are no “magical” words that result in salvation. It is only faith in Jesus’ death and resurrection that can save us. If you understand that you are a sinner and in need of salvation through Jesus Christ, here is a sinner’s prayer you can pray to God:
If you realised today that you are not sure whether Jesus is in your life, then think about it this way, He is passing here now, and who knows maybe it is the last time for you to get the chance to invite him into your heart because you might not be here tomorrow for all we know.
Rev 3:20 says “Listen (this is Jesus speaking) I stand at the door and knock: if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come into his house and eat with him, and he will eat with Me”
If Jesus is knocking on your door now and you realise that before today you were not 100% sure of your salvation and you realise that you need Him and want Him in your life.
Then open the door of your heart right now and let He come in.
No one can open the door for you, that you must do yourself, Jesus will not force Himself into your heart, you must let Him in.
Now for that to happen you pray a simple prayer asking Jesus to do just that:
So if you have come to the realisation that you don’t have Jesus in your life and you understand that without Him you are lost then pray this prayer now.
Please understand, it is crucially important that you do not base your salvation on having said a prayer.
Reciting a prayer cannot save you!
If you want to receive the salvation that is available through Jesus, then place your faith in Him.
Fully trust His death as the sufficient sacrifice for your sins. Completely rely on Him alone as your Savior.
Please don’t pray this prayer just because you have decided to do so.
This prayer only has significance and purpose if you understand, really mean and truly believe the words that you pray.
So if it is your wish to cross the line of faith to let Jesus into your life then pray this prayer now.
Oh, Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and I realise that without You I am lost.
I know that I deserve the consequences of my sin.
I come now to lay my sins before You,
I am so thankful that You love me so much, that You died on the cross for me,
Forgive me for what I am, but please wash me clean
You promised that if I open the door that You will come in.
Lord Jesus, I hear your knock, come into my heart and make me the person that you want me to be.
Thank You, Lord, for saving me and forgiving me!
I am now putting my trust in You Jesus as my personal Lord and Savior.
I believe that Your death and resurrection is sufficient sacrifice for my sins and for my forgiveness.
Thank, You Jesus Amen.
