The New Testament
The new testament
The new testament consists of 27 short writings composed in Greek between 50 and 130 AD .
They are not originally written as part of a 'New Testament' , to succeed the 'Old Testament' , the Jewish Bible . The idea of a close connection of holy scriptures does not develop until around 180 AD, and for a long time after that there is a dispute as to whether some of the writings now in the New Testament ( Hebrews , James , 2 Peter, 2 and 3 John, Jude and Revelation) should be included .
There is widespread disagreement among scholars about the dating of the New Testament books. One key issue is whether or not the figures named as there authors actually wrote them, or whether names such as Matthew, James and Peter are in fact pseudonyms (Alias or nom de plume). Some of the letters attributed to Paul are certainly authentic, but others ( Ephesians , Colossians and later the letters to Timothy and Titus) looks as if they were attributed to him by disciples writing in his spirit.
Given this disagreement it is impossible to say more than that the undoubtedlyauthentic letters were written between 50 and 62 AD and that the rest were written after that .
The New Testament Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles are written between 70 and 100 AD, again, it is hard to determine their precise dates,
Mark is the earliest and the
Gospel of John the latest, and they're all presuppose the fall of Jerusalem.
The letter to the Hebrews is written before 95AD,
1 Peter and James perhaps a little later
The letters of John some time after the Gospel of John.
The letter of Jude is dependent on the letter of James, and 2 Peter, usually reckoned to be the latest book of the New Testament, is dependent on Jude . The book which concludes the New Testament,Revelation, is probably written around 95 AD, given that it reflects hostility to Christians at the end of the reign of Emperor Domitian
