Judging Others- When Can We

“What does the Bible mean that we are not to judge others?”This is an issue that has confused many people. On one hand, we are commanded by the Lord Jesus, "Do not judge, or you too will be judged" (Matthew 7:1). On the other hand, the Bible also exhorts us to beware of evildoers and false prophets and to avoid those who practice all kinds of evil. How are we to discern who these people are if we do not make some kind of judgment about them? Christians are often accused of “judging” whenever they speak out against a sinful activity or when another Christian questions the word of God, by just accepting part of scripture (or "believing" in his or her own way). There is a righteous kind of judgment we are supposed to exercise-with careful discernment

Matthew 7:2-6 declares, "Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged. And why worry about the speck in your friend's eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to your friend, let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye, when you can't see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friends eye". Don't waste what is holy on people who are unholy. Don't throw your pearls to pigs! They would trample the pearls, then turn and attack you. What Jesus was condemning here was hypocritical, self-righteous judgments of others.

InMatthew 7:2-5, Jesus warns against judging someone else for his sin when you yourself are sinning even worse. That is the kind of judging Jesus commanded us not to do. But if a believer sees another believer sinning or not conducting his or her life according to the Word of God , then it is his Christian duty to lovingly and respectfully confront the person with his sin or bring to his attention the correct way according to Scripture.

John 7:24"Look beneath the surface so you can judge correctly". When Jesus told us not to judge, He was telling us not to judge hypocritically.

1Corintians 5:12-13. It isn't my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning. God will judge those on the outside; but as the Scriptures say, "You must remove the evil person from among you."This is not judging, but rather pointing out the truth in hope-and with the ultimate goal-of bringing repentance in the other person. and restoration to the fellowship.

James 5:20"My dear brothers and sisters, if someone among you wonders away from the truth and is brought back, you can be sure that whoever brings the sinner back will save that person from death and bring about the forgiveness of many sins.

Matthew 18:15-17.If another believer sins against you, go privately and point out the offense. If the other person listens and confesses it, you have wo that person back. But if you are unsuccessful, take one or two others with you and go back again, so that everything you say may be confirmed by two or three witnesses. If the person still refuses to listen, take your case to the church. Thenif he or she won't accept the church's decision, treat that person as a pagan or a corrupt tax collector.

And We are to speak the truth in love(Ephesians 4:15-16).Instead we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of His body the church. He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.

We are to proclaim what God’s Word says about sin. 2 Timothy 4:2-5 instructs us "Preach the word of God . Be prepared, whether the time his favorable or not. Patientlycorrect, rebuke and encourage your people with good teaching. For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them what ever their itching ears want to hear. They will reject the truth and chase after myths. But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. Don't be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at telling others the Good News and fully carry out the ministry God has given you"

We are to “judge” sin and false teachings but always with the goal of presenting the solution for sin and its consequences in accordance with the Word-the Lord Jesus Christ , He is the only way John 14:6Jesus told him "I am the Way the Truth and the Life no one can come to the Father except through Me"

Use Scripture to win them over not your own arguments.

2Timothy3:16-17

All scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare an equip His people to do every good work.

Ephesians4:15 Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church.

Colossians 1:28&29"So we tell others about Christ, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all the wisdom God has given us. We want present them to God, perfect in their relationship to Christ. That is why I struggle so hard , depending on Christ's mighty power that works within me.

Don't argue, that will bring you no ware, use the Word as the only truth and evidence

2Timothy 2:23-24Again I say, and don't get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach and be patient with difficult people.

Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people's hearts, and they will learn the truth.

More scripture on judging:

John 3:18

"There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God's one and only Son.

If you do not believe that Jesus is God, then you do not believe in God's one and only Son, and you have already been judged

Corinthians 6:3

Don't you realize that we will judge the angels ?. so you should surely be able to resolve ordinary disputes in this life
