A Born Again Christian What Is

“What does it mean to be a born again Christian?”What does it mean to be a born again Christian? The classic passage from the Bible that answers this question is

John 3:1-21New Living Translation (NLT)

1 There was a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader who was a Pharisee. 2 After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus. “Rabbi,” he said, “we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you.”

Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again,(Or born from above; also in 3:7.you cannot see the Kingdom of God.”

“What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?”

Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.(Or and spirit. The Greek word for Spirit can also be translated wind; see 3:8.) Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life.(Greek what is born of the Spirit is spirit7 So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You(The Greek word for you is plural; also in 3:12) must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.”

“How are these things possible?” Nicodemus asked.

10 Jesus replied, “You are a respected Jewish teacher, and yet you don’t understand these things? 11 I assure you, we tell you what we know and have seen, and yet you won’t believe our testimony. 12 But if you don’t believe me when I tell you about earthly things, how can you possibly believe if I tell you about heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone to heaven and returned. But the Son of Man(Some manuscripts add who lives in heaven. “Son of Man” is a title Jesus used for himselfhas come down from heaven. 14 And as Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 so that everyone who believes in him will have eternal life.( Or everyone who believes will have eternal life in him)16 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave(Or For God loved the world so much that he gavehis one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.

18 “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. 19 And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. 20 All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. 21 But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.(Or can see God at work in what he is doing)”

The Lord Jesus Christ is talking to Nicodemus, a prominent Pharisee and member of the Sanhedrin (a ruler of the Jews). Nicodemus had come to Jesus at night. Nicodemus had questions to ask Jesus. As Jesus talked with Nicodemus, He said, John 3:3-7Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again,(Or born from above; also in 3:7.you cannot see the Kingdom of God.”

“What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?”

Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.(Or and spirit. The Greek word for Spirit can also be translated wind; see 3:8.) Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life.(Greek what is born of the Spirit is spirit7 So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You(The Greek word for you is plural; also in 3:12) must be born again.’ The phrase “born again” literally means “born from above.” Nicodemus had a real need. He needed a change of his heart—a spiritual transformation. New birth, being born again, is an act of God whereby eternal life is imparted to the person who believes

2 Corinthians 5:1717 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!Titus 3:5he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. (Greek He saved us through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit )1 Peter 1:3The Hope of Eternal LifeAll praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation,1 John 2:2929 Since we know that Christ is righteous, we also know that all who do what is right are God’s children.1 John 3:9Those who have been born into God’s family do not make a practice of sinning, because God’s life (Greek because his seed.) is in them. So they can’t keep on sinning, because they are children of God.1 John 4:7Loving One AnotherDear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God.1 John 5:1-4Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ(Or the Messiah.) has become a child of God. And everyone who loves the Father loves his children, too. We know we love God’s children if we love God and obey his commandments. Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome. For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith.1 John 5:18he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. (Greek He saved us through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit )

John 1:12,13

12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. 13 They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.

All these verses above indicate that “born again” also carries the idea “to become children of God” through trust in the name of Jesus Christ. The question logically comes, “Why does a person need to be born again?” The Apostle Paul says in:Ephesians 2:1Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins.(“And you He made alive says the NKJV)To the Romans in, the Apostle wrote:Romans 3:2323 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. So, a person needs to be born again in order to have their sins forgiven and have a relationship with God.How does that come to be?Ephesians 2:8-9God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.When one is “saved,” he/she has been born again, spiritually renewed, and is now a child of God by right of new birth. Trusting in Jesus Christ, the One who paid the penalty of sin when He died on the cross, is what it means to be “born again” spiritually. 2 Corinthians 5:1717 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! If you have never trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior, will you consider the prompting of the Holy Spirit as He speaks to your heart?

You need to be born again. Will you pray the prayer of repentance and become a new creation in Christ today?

John 1:12-13

12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. 13 They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.

It is only trusting in Christ that can save you from sin. This prayer is simply a way to express to God your faith in Him and thank Him for providing for your salvation. “God, I know that I have sinned against you and am deserving of punishment. But Jesus Christ took the punishment that I deserve so that through faith in Him I could be forgiven. I place my trust in You for salvation. Thank You for Your wonderful grace and forgiveness—the gift of eternal life! Amen!”

If you want to accept Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and be born again,, say the following words to God. Remember, saying this prayer or any other prayer will not save you.It is only trusting and believing in Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross for you that can save you from sin. This prayer is simply a way to express to God your faith in Him and thank Him for providing for your salvation.

The words themselves will not save you. Only faith in Jesus Christ can provide salvation! It is important to remember that salvation is not received by reciting a prayer or uttering certain words. The Bible nowhere records a person receiving salvation by a prayer.

Prayer can be connected to the act of placing your faith in Jesus alone for salvation, and saying this prayer is a way to declare that to God, with this prayer you can express our faith in Him and thank Him for providing for your salvation.

“God, I know that I have sinned against you and deserve punishment. But I believe that Jesus Christ took the punishment that I deserve so that through faith in Him I could be forgiven. I receive Your offer of forgiveness and I accept Jesus as my personal Savior!

With your help, I place my trust in You for salvation. Thank You for Your wonderful grace and forgiveness – the gift of eternal life! Amen!”
