Eternal Life

Eternal Life1 John 5:13I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life.

Although this powerful, five-chapter letter from the apostle John is full of vital insights into the Christian life, it is written to “little children”1 John 5:21Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts.(Greek keep yourselves from idols.)

so that they might “know” the majesty and wonder of eternal life.John begins his epistle with a reminder that he “knew” this Jesus from whom the promise of eternal life came1 John 1:1-3We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, (Greek What was from the beginning.) whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of life. This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us. We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. John was an eyewitness to Christ’s resurrection (John 20), which is the most powerful proof of the claims and promises of the Lord Acts 17:31For he has set a day for judging the world with justice by the man he has appointed, and he proved to everyone who this is by raising him from the dead.”Much of that which is applied in John’s epistle is based on the precise teachings of the Lord Jesus Himself, heard by John and recorded in John’s gospel under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit .John 20:31But these are written so that you may continue to believe[a] that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name. Those who believe will “not perish” John 3:15-16so that everyone who believes in him will have eternal life.(Or everyone who believes will have eternal life in him.)…………. “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. The “water” of Christ springs up to “everlasting life” John 4:14But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”Whoever has everlasting life “is passed” from death to life John 5:24  “I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life. Those who come to Christ will “never hunger” John 6:35Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. No one is able to “snatch” the believer out of the Father’s hand John 10:28-30I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me, for my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else.( Other manuscripts read for what my Father has given me is more powerful than anything; still others read for regarding that which my Father has given me, he is greater than all) No one can snatch them from the Father’s hand.30 The Father and I are one.”John 11:26Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die.

Based on the Word of God, John gives us several experiential tests by which we can know that we “live”:

We love and keep His commandments 1 John 2:3And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments. We know and love the truth1 John 2:20 But you are not like that, for the Holy One has given you his Spirit, and all of you know thetruth. We love the brethren 1 John 3:14If we love our Christian brothers and sisters, it proves that we have passed from death to life. But aperson who has no love is still dead.We have God’s Holy Spirit1 John 4:13And God has given us his Spirit as proof that we live in him and he in us.
