Resurrection Importance
“Why is the resurrection of Jesus Christ important?”The resurrection of Jesus is important for several reasons. First, it witnesses to the immense power of God Himself. To believe in the resurrection is to believe in God. If God exists, and if He created the universe and has power over it, He has power to raise the dead. If He does not have such power, He is not a God worthy of our faith and worship. Only He who created life can resurrect it after death, only He can reverse the hideousness that is death itself, and only He can remove the sting that is death and the victory that is the grave’s1 Corinthians 15:54-55Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die,(Some manuscripts add and our mortal bodies have been transformed into immortal bodies)this Scripture will be fulfilled:“Death is swallowed up in victory.(Isa 25:8)O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”[Hos 13:14 (Greek version).]In resurrecting Jesus from the grave, God reminds us of His absolute sovereignty over life and death.Second, the resurrection of Jesus is a testimony to the resurrection of human beings, which is a basic tenet of the Christian faith. Unlike all other religions, Christianity alone possesses a founder who transcends death and who promises that His followers will do the same. All other religions were founded by men and prophets whose end was the grave. As Christians, we take comfort in the fact that our God became man, died for our sins, and was resurrected the third day. The grave could not hold Him. He lives, and He sits today at the right hand of God the Father in heaven. In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul explains in detail the importance of the resurrection of Christ. Some in Corinth did not believe in the resurrection of the dead, and in this chapter Paul gives six disastrous consequences if there were no resurrection: 1.Preaching Christ would be senseless1 Corinthians 15:14aAnd if Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless,2. Faith in Christ would be useless1 Corinthians 15:14and your faith is useless.3. All the witnesses and preachers of the resurrection would be liars1 Corinthians 15:15And we apostles would all be lying about God—for we have said that God raised Christ from the grave. But that can’t be true if there is no resurrection of the dead.4.No one would be redeemed from sin1 Corinthians 15:17And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless and you are still guilty of your sins.5.All former believers would have perished1 Corinthians 15:18In that case, all who have died believing in Christ are lost!6. Christians would be the most pathetic andpitied people on theearth1 Corinthians 15:19And if our hope in Christ is only for this life, we are more to be pitied than anyone in the world. But Christ indeed has risen from the dead as the “First fruit”1 Corinthians 15:20But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead. He is the first of a great harvest of all who have died.assuring that we will follow Him in resurrection. The inspired Word of God guarantees the believer’s resurrection at the coming of Jesus Christ for His Body (the Church) at the Rapture. Such hope and assurance results in a great song of triumph as Paul writes 1 Corinthians 15:55 above, “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”How do these concluding verses relate to the importance of the resurrection? Paul answers1 Corinthians 15:58So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless. He reminds us that because we know we will be resurrected to new life, we can suffer persecution and danger for Christ’s sake, just as He did1 Corinthians 15:29-31If the dead will not be raised, what point is there in people being baptized for those who are dead? Why do it unless the dead will someday rise again? And why should we ourselves risk our lives hour by hour? For I swear, dear brothers and sisters, that I face death daily. This is as certain as my pride in what Christ Jesus our Lord has done in you. We can follow the example of the thousands of martyrs through history who gladly traded their earthly lives for everlasting life via the resurrection. The resurrection is the triumphant and glorious victory for every believer. Jesus Christ diedWas buriedRose the third day according to the Scripture. And, He is coming again! The dead in Christ will be raised up, and those who remain and are alive at His coming will be changed and receive new, glorified bodies 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died[a] so you will not grieve like people who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died. We tell you this directly from the Lord: We who are still living when the Lord returns will not meet him ahead of those who have died. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the Christians who have died[c] will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever. So encourage each other with these words. Why is the resurrection of Jesus Christ important to salvation?
It demonstrated that God accepted Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf. It proves that God has the power to raise us from the dead. It guarantees that those who believe in Christ will not remain dead, but will be resurrected unto eternal life. That is our blessed hope!
