The Gospel of PeaceIsaiah 52:7
How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the messenger who brings good news, the good news of peace and salvation, the news that the God of Israel(Hebrew of Zion.) reigns!
Surprisingly, there are more verses containing the word “peace” in the Old Testament book of Isaiah (King James Version) than in any other book of the Bible.
The central occurrence (15 before, 15 after) is in the text above, speaking of those whose feet travel with the beautiful gospel (that is, “good tidings,” mentioned twice in this verse) of peace. The one proclaiming this gospel is said to be publishing salvation; announcing the imminent reign of God the Saviour over all the earth.
The first mention of “peace” in Isaiah speaks of the coming King and His reign, and so does the final occurrence.
Isaiah 9:6For a child is born to us, a son is given to us.The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called:Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Then, in Isaiah’s last chapter we read,
This is what the Lord says:“I will give Jerusalem a river of peace and prosperity. The wealth of the nations will flow to her.Her children will be nursed at her breasts, carried in her arms, and held on her lap.
This wonderful gospel of peace is specifically mentioned just twice in the New Testament. The First is a direct quotation from our text.
Romans 10:15And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”
The second is in connection with the Christian’s spiritual armour.
For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. (Or For shoes, put on the readiness to preach the Good News of peace with God.)
The “beautiful feet” that are to carry the good tidings are, most appropriately, to be “shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace”.
It is our high privilege to be among those whose feet travel upon the mountains, and across the plains, and over the seas with the beautiful gospel of peace and salvation.
