“What is the difference between the soul and spirit of man?”The soul and the spirit are the two primary immaterial aspects that Scripture ascribes to humanity. It can be confusing to attempt to discern the precise differences between the two. The word “spirit” refers only to the immaterial facet of humanity. Human beings have a spirit, but we are not spirits. However, in Scripture, only believers are said to be spiritually alive

1 Corinthians 2:11

No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit.

Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

James 2:26Just as the body is dead without breath, (Or without spirit.) so also faith is dead without good works.while unbelievers are spiritually dead Ephesians 2:1-5Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world.(Greek obeying the commander of the power of the air ) He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else. But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)

Colossians 2:13You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins.

In Paul’s writing, the spiritual was pivotal to the life of the believer1 Corinthians 2:14But people who aren’t spiritual (Or who don’t have the Spirit; or who have only physical life.) can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.

1 Corinthians 3:1Dear brothers and sisters, when I was with you I couldn’t talk to you as I would to spiritual people.(Or to people who have the Spirit.) I had to talk as though you belonged to this world or as though you were infants in the Christian life. (Greek in Christ.)

Ephesians 1:3All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ.Ephesians 5:19singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts.Colossians 1:9So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding.Colossians 3:16

Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. The spirit is the element in humanity which gives us the ability to have an intimate relationship with God. Whenever the word “spirit” is used, it refers to the immaterial part of humanity that “connects” with God, who Himself is spirit. John 4:24For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”The word “soul” can refer to both the immaterial and material aspects of humanity. Unlike human beings having a spirit, human beings are souls.

In its most basic sense, the word “soul” means “life.”

However, beyond this essential meaning, the Bible speaks of the soul in many contexts.

One of these is humanity’s eagerness to sin

Luke 12:26And if worry can’t accomplish a little thing like that, what’s the use of worrying over bigger things?

Humanity is naturally evil, and our souls are tainted as a result. The life principle of the soul is removed at the time of physical death

Genesis 35:18Rachel was about to die, but with her last breath she named the baby Ben-oni (which means “son of my sorrow”). The baby’s father, however, called him Benjamin (which means “son of my right hand”).Jeremiah 15:2And if they say to you, ‘But where can we go?’ tell them, ‘This is what the Lord says:‘Those who are destined for death, to death; those who are destined for war, to war;those who are destined for famine, to famine; those who are destined for captivity, to captivity.’

The soul, as with the spirit, is the center of many spiritual and emotional experiences

Job 30:25

Did I not weep for those in trouble? Was I not deeply grieved for the needy?

Psalm 43:5Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God!I will praise him again—my Savior and my God!

Jeremiah 13:17

And if you still refuse to listen,I will weep alone because of your pride. My eyes will overflow with tears, because the Lord’s flock will be led away into exile.

Whenever the word “soul” is used, it can refer to the whole person, whether alive or in the afterlife. The soul and the spirit are connected, but separable

Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

The soul is the essence of humanity’s being; it is who we are.

The spirit is the aspect of humanity that connects with God.
