Our Refuge

Our RefugePsalm 46:1-2“God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea.“ Psalm 9:9The Lord is a shelter for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. What a comfort it is, in these days of turmoil and opposition, to know that our Lord isIsaiah 25:4“A tower of refuge to the poor, O Lord, a tower of refuge to the needy in distress. You are a refuge from the storm and a shelter from the heat. For the oppressive acts of ruthless people are like a storm beating against a wall,” Our refuge is strong and secure. The psalmist testifies:Psalm 91:2This I declare about the Lord:He alone is my refuge, my place of safety;he is my God, and I trust him. Then God answers:Psalm 91:9-13If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you;no plague will come near your home. For he will order his angelsto protect you wherever you go.They will hold you up with their handsso you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone. You will trample upon lions and cobras;you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet! Not only does our refuge provide us safety and protection, but no other refuge will do. After identifying our refuge by the words, Isaiah 28:16Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says:“Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem,(Hebrew in Zion.)a firm and tested stone. It is a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on. Whoever believes need never be shaken.Compare Rom 9:33God warned them of this in the Scriptures when he said,“ I am placing a stone in Jerusalem that makes people stumble, a rock that makes them fall. But anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.1 Pet 2:6As the Scriptures say,“I am placing a cornerstone in Jerusalem, chosen for great honour, and anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.”Isaiah 28:17God warns that those who refuse His true refuge will receive instead His “judgment,”I will test you with the measuring line of justice and the plumb line of righteousness.Since your refuge is made of lies,a hailstorm will knock it down. Since it is made of deception,a flood will sweep it away. The apostle Peter, fresh from his personal encounters with his risen Lord, confronted the Jewish leaders with their serious error of rejection. Acts 4:11For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says, ‘The stone that you builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.’(Ps 118:22)In his charge, however, he included the precious truth: Acts 4:12There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.”Our refuge, our sure foundation, is none other than our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, to whom we have Hebrews 6:18So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us.
